What is a good car for a family road trip?

We are a family of four (and a dog), and we’re planning on taking a road trip from across the United States this summer, stopping at national landmarks and stuff like that. We own a 2002 mini van, but we’re thinking about buying something newer, more reliable, and with better gas mileage. Maybe a hybrid? We’d prefer something foreign like Honda, Toyota, or Nissan. Any suggestions?
We don’t want to rent a car because our 17 year old son won’t be able to drive.
