Is it possible to get fired over a family emergency?

I have been trying to get a shift this weekend off for about a week now, with no success. There’s literally no one to cover for me, but I have no choice, I have to attend to my family. Is it possible for them to fire me over this? I have only missed about 3 shifts since working there due to sickness, and I am never late. I have been working there for about 4/5 months. And what do I say to tell them I cannot work?
