How do I get my family to cope with my cats death?

She just had kittens and it was a really sudden death, probably ate something she shouldn’t have, and she passed away. Now, my family, my boyfriend and my mom, maily, because they were the ones to see her pass, are in a “state of shock”. What do I do to make them feel better about it? She was a great cat and I don’t want to make it worse.

Don’t do anything. We all deal with death a little different, just let it go. They will each deal with it on there own terms.

The sudden and inexplicable death of a beloved pet is very hard to deal with.
I saw a wonderful quote yesterday: “No amount of time can erase the memory of a good cat, and no amount of masking tape can totally remove his fur from your couch” Leo Dworken.
A little humor and dwelling on fond memories is the way to go.

Bring the cat to a taxidermist & have it mounted so it can be with the family for ever. Or maybe bring the pelt to a furrier and have some nice gloves lined with the cats fur. Give everybody in the family a pair as a gift. If you run short on having enough pelt for all the gloves find one of those kittens that match her color the closest.

Give everyone a chance to mourn. Talking about her may help: telling stories about all the funny things she did, what she meant to you, your special memories. Tears are okay. Don’t feel like you can’t grieve because she was “just a cat”. She was an important, irreplaceable part of your family. Honor her memory and never forget her.

If you can, have her cremated and that way everyone can pet the box or something and cry and after awhile they will cry less and be glad that she is with them.
