How does a family volunteer with children during the holidays?
The Quickened One asked:
My husband and I live very far from any family and every year we spend Thanksgiving and Christmas with just our small children. As this is nice and special, we both wish to make this year and possibly the the future years memorable ones and do something meaningful.

Since our kids are small, we know that this will pose a roadblock to certain things.
But we wish to start volunteering our Thanksgiving and/or Christmas Eve nights to a shelter, hospice or nursing home.
Anyways, any other suggestions?
God bless

wow. thats very nice of you.
-you could volunteer at the local soup kitchen serving the less fortunate.
-you could christmas carol and ask for a donation (i do this with my friends every year and we raise between 50-100 dollars for the Make a Wish Foundation)
-you could read to children at a children’s hospital
i know its early, but i wish you a happy and healthy holiday.

That’s such a nice family activity for Christmas. What if you went to hospitals and sang Christmas carols to the people there. You could bring them Christmas cookies. I don’t know if you would want to have your kids see sick people, so you could have them help make the cookies. Maybe your kids could draw some nice cards for the people or make little Christmas crafts for them. You could also go caroling and bring cookies to a fire station or police station.

I think it is important to teach children to care for others, especially for those in their own communities. It was with my great-grandchildren that I founded The Shoebox Project, which we do all year long. Even very young children enjoy shopping for other kids at the dollar store, & they are very careful to choose exactly what they think will please the recipients. You could do something similar in your own home & deliver your boxes to your local women’s shelter or to the Social Services Dept. for foster children & teens. I frequently hear from the social workers how important our contributions are to youngsters in crisis. I’ve listed the web site below. Be sure to click on the photo section so you can see some of our finished boxes, & there is a link to a list of suggested items for filling them. We decorate our boxes with cute fabrics, using wallpaper paste instead of glue, but your children could decorate them in different ways. This project is also a good way to teach the value of recycling, as the shoeboxes all get a 2nd life.
Be sure to take lots of pics of your family doing your chosen project, so you can keep your new memories intact by scrapbooking them. That would not only be another fun family project, but it would reinforce what you are trying to teach them. I wish you well–
