How would you recommend discussing starting a family with your husband?
M k asked:
We have been together for over 10 years, and got married a year ago. I am ready to start a family, and he has stated he wants a family soon too. He isn’t the type to suggest things first, so I will need to be the one to approach the subject. I am worried he is going to think that I want to start now, because my best friend had a baby a few months ago. In all honesty, that didn’t help the itch, but the itch was there far before she was pregnant. We are both professionals (lawyer and a veterniarian). I’d appreciate your advice/insight.

Just come right out and tell him you think its time for you all to start trying for a baby. It takes time so if hes worried its too soon it takes a while normally to conceive. Good luck to you both

Well if he has stated he wants kids then I don’t see much of a problem. Just say to him ‘when do you want to have kids’ easy. What’s the worst that could happen?

I would have discussed it at least 8 years ago to make sure we both wanted children, and that we both agreed on WHEN we would begin our family.

Before my youngest son (my older one is from before we were married), one day I said “I want a baby” and he said “ok, me too.” Straight up, straight-forward communication. No beating around the bush. You’ll be able to gauge his sincere reaction if you just come out and say it.

Hi! How fun, starting a family. I brought up the subject with my husband directly. I asked him if he would be willing to become a dad and then asked how soon did he see that happening. He then told me the time frame he had in mind. I think the best policy is honesty, letting him know how you feel. See if he feels the same way.

You guys are married, not dating and as you stated you both want kids. So, just go up to him and say “Babe,(or honey whatever you call him) I’m ready to have a baby what about you? and see what he says.

The way I did was we were grilling a stuffed salmon on the grill one night, and having a nice wine. I told him that was ovulating that night and wondered if he might want to try to make a baby that night. He was shocked a little at first and smiled and said no, but about 15 minutes later he said, yes, I think we might try tonight, and if it happens then I guess it is meant to be. Worked out well, we had out 1st child 11 months later, and it was a nice transition into becoming parents.
