Funny you should mention about the government. Truth is the government will say straight out, you are on your own for at least 72 hours and have come up with CERT. I would also look into your local community and see if they have CERT teams. These are neighborhood volunteers trained to provide basic emergency services for the first few hours of a disaster in their local neighborhood (in the 50's they were called civil defense volunteers). If not, and you are looking to help you community, you ought to look at starting a CERT program. Go to FEMA.Gov, they have info on how to prepare for disasters.
