In Edgar Allen Poe’s The Cask of Amontillado, what about the family crest has to do with the plot- is it revenge? Is there anything else I can say about it?

  1. Persiphone_Hellecat:

The crest is a large human foot of gold in a field of azure blue crushing a serpent whose fangs are embedded in the heel. It shows that the Montressors aren’t going to take any abuse from anyone. Even though the serpent is biting the heel, the foot is crushing it and killing it. It also shows the blue sky, something Montressor is denying his enemy by walling him in the cellar. The foot is gold, showing their superiority. Pax- C

Persephone has it right. Another key point is the motto: “Nemo me impune lacessit,” often translated as “no one strikes me with impunity.” This another manifestation of the Montressor code of vengeance.
